Music doesn’t always have to be a complicated thing. There’s a lot to learn about genres, sure-there are a lot of genres and sub-genres in electronic music, and some people know about them all and others don’t know and don’t care. The trick is that you don’t have to know it all in order to appreciate the music and identify what you like and dislike, and even if you do know it all it only makes the musical experience better for you. That brings us to two different things: what you’ll hear on PB Radio, and what Phoenix spins.
Phoenix blends elements of all kinds of trance in his mixes from energetic epic and progressive to chiller Ibiza and deep, and his sets are influenced by funky and disco house. Don’t be surprised to catch other genres sneaking into his sets, Phoenix believes it’s diversity that makes the setlist, and it would be unsurprising to hear an old 80s track thrown in for good measure, or some breaks to lighten the mood. Remixes of popular songs stand side by side with new rhythms and old school favorites that get the crowd moving.
Phoenix believes that the strength of a dj lies in not only his skill and track selection, but in his versatility and ability to blend different genres, styles, and moods into his set, in order to best please a crowd of people or provide a diverse musical experience. You’ll find many different labels and styles in Phoenix’s record crates.
Phoenix believes there is a kind of sub-genre he likes to call Trance Fusion. While not a horribly original concept, it seems to be a popular goal to have but rare goal for some DJs to achieve: Trance the way it used to be, but not entirely the songs that used to be. Phoenix believes that some of the finest trance music is older trance, naturally-tracks that all started with someone dreaming up a song and laying some beats on it, and not just the morass of track-y releases that flood the record stores today in the name of the almighty trance. This isn’t to say there aren’t excellent new releases by new artists on new labels-this is the very essence of Trance Fusion: old school tracks and faves that people know and love or haven’t discovered yet, spun alongside new beats and rhythms that the dancefloors know well or maybe haven’t seen yet. Stew that up with some spice from various different styles-some funky house, some breaks, an old pop hit, garnish with some kids on a dancefloor, a dash chili powder, and a sprig of fresh parsley and you have a sweet set.
As for PB Radio, we’re not an all-electronic-all-the-time station, although electronic is by far the majority of what you’ll hear. At least 95% of the playlist is electronica, but the rest varies from alternative rock to j-pop to hip-hop. Variety is, after all, the spice of life, and we bring it to you. What is a refined musical palette without hearing something different, and what better to help tie it all together than hearing things that are alike and yet so very different? Confused yet? Tune in and listen, you’ll get the idea.
