Q: Who are you?
A: Phoenix! Duh! Seriously though, Phoenix- I’m a progressive trance DJ based in the Baltimore/Washington DC metro area.
Q: Progressive trance? Can you give me examples?
A: Sure! When I think of exactly what progressive trance means I think of artists like Paul van Dyk, BT, Chicane, or even Paul Oakenfold. I also think of DJs like Sandra Collins, Sasha, Digweed, Darren Emerson, and local talent I used to dance to when I partied all the time. I think of record labels like Positiva, HoojChoons, and Kinetic. However, I’m not *exclusively* progressive trance- the best DJs incorporate a multitude of genres and styles into their mixes.
Q: So where have you spun before? Have I heard you in a club?
A: Absolutely! I’ve performed in a variety of venues, including a starlit session on the patio of the old EDGE nightclub in DC. I’ve spun out at venues that range from coffehouses to houseparties to invite-only events.
Q: Sounds like you’re flexible.
A: I like to think so. I really enjoy performing, and I have a varied enough selection of music for several genres that I can spin for different crowds with different tastes in different locales. The bottom line is that when I’m spinning I’m happy and I really like to read the crowd I’m performing for- it helps drive the direction of a set or the style of music I’ll go with.
Q: You’ve changed around your set on the fly to better fit the crowd?
A: Yeah, it happens all the time. Being able to read the crowd is one of the most important skills a DJ can have.
Q: How long is your usual set?
A: It depends on the performance. My practice sets usually last an hour to an hour and a half. Performance sets are about two hours, but can go longer.
Q: How can I get you to DJ my party?
A: Email me at phoenix_at_plasticbohemia_dot_com with some information about your event.
Q: Will I be very poor after you DJ my event? Are you that expensive?
A: No silly-I know what it’s like to throw an event on a budget, and I’m the kind of DJ who spins for the love of spinning.
Q: Would you need special gear? Tables or something?
A: I don’t need any special gear, assuming you have a traditional DJ setup with two turntables and a mixer. I prefer to bring my own headphones and needles, and should I need anything special I’ll bring it along. Hell, I can even bring my own gear if necessary.
Q: Half empty or half full?
A: There is no glass.
Q: Wow, you’re a hottie. You seeing anyone?
A: Email me and we’ll talk. ^_~
Q: Anything else I should know?
A: I don’t consider myself just a DJ. I’m also involved with the EDM scene in general- I’ve spent a lot of time producing my own events and helping orgainize others for production groups here and in days gone by. I like being involved in the EDM community in many different ways, performing is just one aspect of that.
